Kickstart Your Year with a Mood Board Journal

Although the idea of a New Year resolution is romantic, the last few years have taught me that establishing a single goal based on where I am mentally at the beginning of the year can have a detrimental effect in the months to follow.

The Solution? A Mood Board Journal.

Mood Boards are a collection of images, colour palettes, text, and many other materials that are arranged on a single page to evoke a particular style, message, or feeling. Throw a journal into the mix, and you can go from having an individual message to a collection of stories that ebb and flow alongside the frequency of life’s changes.

How to Begin: Gather Your Materials

  • Scissors
  • Double-sided tape
  • Glue sticks
  • Sketchbook or notebook
  • Magazines
    • Travel and National Geographic magazines have photos of diverse nature, lifestyle, and architecture.
    • The Magnolia Journal is another great resource for inspirational photos, recipes, and art for just under $8.
  • Scrapbooking leftovers
  • Recipe clippings
  • Stickers
  • And anything else you may have lying around!

Not only will a Mood Board Journal give you inspiration, but it also helps to declutter the papers and things that you can’t seem to let go of.

Assembling your Journal: Tips and Tricks to Unlock Inspiration

This is where the journal begins to take shape!

Tip #1: Flip through the magazines and if anything catches your eye that causes a double take, steals a smile, makes you linger, or stirs a memory, cut it out and add to the pile. Your inspiration is entirely dependent on you so try not to put too much pressure on yourself to “pick the best photo” or “what seems like the right choice”.

Once you’ve gone through your raw materials, take your stack of inspiration and begin sorting.

Tip #2: Lay all your photos out on the ground or a table so you can get a feel for how you’d like your pages to look before you begin gluing anything down. Try organizing some by colors, others by patterns, or people – the possibilities are endless but remember to be kind to yourself, your inspiration can look different every day.

Tip #3: Leave some negative space or blank pages throughout your notebook. This allows your mood board journal to continue to grow and develop as the months go on.

Plus, the blank space serves as a reminder that this project may never be truly ‘finished’ but remains an ongoing project. Much like our own personal journeys.

Tip #4: Place your journal in a high-traffic area of your home so you see it often.

Mine is next to my computer since I work from home. It helps me to find grounding before I start my day and de-escalate when necessary.

I would love to see your journals – they give me inspiration, so please comment below or tag me in your social media posts!

Much love,
